Microbiology is a study of microorganisms or things that cannot be seen by the naked eye. It is a subject that an individual taking a course in the medical field would always consider taking. As Nursing students, we have experienced the interesting world of microbiology for a whole month and where every meeting with our very smart professor gives us information more than what our brains and ourselves could manage with every detail well-explained and astounded with amazing facts that one would consider impossible. I could still remember the first two days of our meeting made me absorb a lot of new information that is beyond what an ordinary person would care to know. Our smart professor went step by step to every topic and how his strategy really made us absorb the information properly. And what is microbiology without going through its application? Yes, one of the activities that made us very interesting into the subject is our laboratory exercises. It was really fun to see what something you have discussed earlier with your professor can be seen by your very own eyes under the microscope. We have tried looking every bacteria and parasitic worms under the microscope and went surprised with their different characteristics. During our lab we also have experienced how to make a culture medium and specifically culture bacterias. We also have tried testing each in different biochemical test such us SIM, LIA, TSI and many more and learned their different reactions to each test. We also experienced their different abilities to resist antibiotics. Another interesting activity we did is how we compared the efficacy of a specific substance in reducing bacterial growth. It was really funny how our professor made us not to wash our hands one hour before the experiment and accumulate dirt in our hands. We also did the Mouthwash activity where we are prohibited to brush our teeth after lunch to test the efficacy of water and tea in our group. The last activity we had was how we were told to bring extracts of different fruits and vegetables and pour each into the three small beakers containing larvae and count each larva that dies every 15 minutes. We also had this home assignment where we have to make mosquitoes lay eggs at the same time catch 5 adult mosquitoes. Microbiology really is an amazing and interesting subject that has touched us and made a very big impact into our life.
